Balbo's was named after Vilma's brother Balbino, who died at 32 years of age in a car accident with a drunk driver. He was the kindest person you ever met. Loved people and nature. His spirit lives on at Balbo's, where our priority is to live in alignment with nature and supporting our community. Our tours are led by local guides, having lived here their entire lives and know from their ancestors the way of the land. All of our products are hand made right here, employing the locals and using natural ingredients from the area, using the methods our grandparents taught. The animals you see are in their natural habitat. They are not caged and not pets. Our home is simply close enough for us to observe them. We respect their space, never interfering with any aspect of their life.
It is a family atmosphere here with 5 kids and 3 dogs. It can get noisy being beside the highway but it's just a 2 minute walk to the river and you're in a different world and immersed in the sounds of nature.
Getting here couldn't be any easier with the bus stop right in the corner and free parking if you have a vehicle.
Vilma and Edward live in Holland but spend as much time as possible at Bablo's.
Vilma made the journey from Nicaragua to Costa Rica with her mother, father, 6 siblings and 45 cows when she was 7 years old. The family homestead is across the street. Her next journey was to Holland in 1995 with her husband at the time. In 2013 she met Edward and when visiting Costa Rica in 2018 Edward noticed the vacant building across the street. They seized the opportunity to fulfil their dream, a place for tourists to meet and create experiences together while improving the lives of the locals by providing employment opportunities.
Balbo's was born. On that original journey to Costa Rica, Vilma's mother was pregnant with Balbino who Vilma nicknamed Balbo. Balbo's was created in honor of her brother.
Edward is a retired school teacher who's lived in Holland his entire life and has done extensive travelling and camping with his 2 boys. His dream is to help struggling communities and enhance the tourists experience on their travels. He loves to arrange tours for the guests and the cost of the tours are designed in the best interest of the guests. Tours have a base price for 1 person with an additional charge per person. That way the guests benefit from going on tours together. Example: Waterfall tour is 35,000 for 1 person + 10,000p/p. If 4 people go together total price is 65,000 (16,250p/p).
Balbo's is the creation of both their visions and welcome all to their family.
Gilma is VIlma's sister and she runs the kitchen. She loves cooking and you will feel it in your food. Every meal is made to your request and she is known for her delicious brown beans. She also makes the best fresh fruit juice. Her carrot and lemon juice is one the most refreshing juices you will ever have. Feel like dancing some salsa, join her as she also loves to dance as she's cooking.
Lily is the newest member of the Balbo's family joining us in December, 2021. Lily brings her holistic practices of meditation, Reiki and sound bowls with daily guided meditations and private healing sessions.
